“Hey Babe, I like your t***” — and other Creepy DMs from Strangers

Getting catcalled in the street, or hit on in the bar can be cringy, creepy, and disrespectful enough, and is not unusual for women to deal with somewhat regularly. But take away the necessity of in-person interaction and add the ease in which anyone can send an unsolicited and anonymous message through social media: creepy, disgusting messages become commonplace.

At the moment we’ve chosen to look at the funny, and quite weird side of some of these types of messages, and put together a highlight reel of a very small sample of Direct Messages some of our team, friends, and acquaintances have received in the past through Instagram, Twitter, and Facebook. It’s not pretty, but you have to laugh in order to not think about how desperate and gross the whole situation is, as the title of this blog was a very real message, and not unique when looking at how many examples we were shown.

A pretty tame introduction, but they’re clearly desperate to ‘get to know’ this person. While a single message asking how someone is would probably not bother anyone (even though randomly messaging a stranger whose picture you took a liking to is weird enough), the constant and repetitive questioning with no response over such a long period is verging on obsessive, and they really should take a hint after never having been sent a response.

And then we have this fine example… no more explanation needed to understand how creepy and gross messaging on social platforms can be. Unfortunately, this is usually a precursor to having an unwanted image of a penis pop up on the screen.

Again, not so bad, but we’ve actively kept these messages on the tame side of people saying how attractive these users are, how much they want to get to know them. But still, no response in November, no response in March, and no response in June when this screenshot was taken….

We had far too many examples of unsolicited dick pics as well tremendously long walls of text expressing deep emotional feelings towards someone they had never met as well, and of course the odd request for a sugar baby (but we’ll get into that in a different blog).
